Living and Working in Humberside
Humberside – Well Connected.
The Humberside Police area encompasses some of the most beautiful countryside in England. With more than 1356 square miles it has a population of over 900,000 people.
The region has excellent transport links. The M62 connects the North Bank to the motorway spine while the M180 feeds traffic to and from the South Bank. London is about 2 hours 45 minutes away by train with Leeds and York nearby.
The ports of Grimsby, Goole, Hull and Immingham account, between them, for 15% of UK overseas trade and represent the country’s main maritime freight gateway with mainland Europe. The Port of Hull is home to P&O North Sea Ferries which carries over a million passengers to Rotterdam and Zeebrugge each year. Meanwhile, Humberside International Airport offers flights to destinations as far away as Cyprus, Tenerife and Bulgaria, flying more than half a million passengers each year.
Humberside’s regional capital is Kingston upon Hull which has a population of almost a quarter of a million. Originally a 12th century trading settlement known as Wyke upon Hull, it changed its name when it was acquired from the Abbots of Meaux by Edward I in 1293.
The city has been transformed over the past few years and is now one of the UK’s biggest retail centres. The stunning waterfront and old town are people-magnets and investment in the town is at an all-time high.
Hull has a recently promoted championship soccer team and two well-supported rugby league clubs. It has its own university and a smaller campus for the University of Lincoln. It was the birthplace of the slave abolitionist William Wilberforce and the first woman to fly solo to Australia, Amy Johnson. Actors Tom Courtenay, Maureen Lipman, Brian Rix and Ian Carmichael are all from the city.
To the West is the fabulous Humber Bridge. Linking the South and North Banks of the Humber, it has a span of over 1400 meters. It is the third-largest structure of its kind in the world, took nine years to build, and provides the link between two areas which had previously been separate and distinct parts of the country.
The constantly shifting coastline north of the River Humber offers fabulous wildlife – particularly at Spurn Point which is a national nature reserve. The coastal towns of Bridlington, Hornsea and Withernsea sport stylish promenades and golden beaches.
Inland, the fertile lowlands lead to the picturesque rolling contours of the Yorkshire Wolds. The Wolds capital of Driffield hosts an important and large-scale agricultural show each year while Pocklington is another bustling market town. Beverley’s famous Minster was built during the 13th and 14th centuries on the original site of the Saxon church of St John of Beverley. It is one of the most glorious examples of ecclesiastical architecture in England and its twin towers dominate the picturesque town which has two market squares and narrow streets. Beverley also has its own horse racing course.
To the South of the Humber, Cleethorpes offers traditional British seaside attractions plus the Pleasure Island Theme Park, a discovery park and a coastal light railway. A little further up the estuary, Grimsby - once one of the world’s great fishing ports - is home to the National Fishing Heritage Centre.
In the tranquil North Lincolnshire District, quiet country lanes roam among the rolling chalk of the Lincolnshire Wolds and the slow-flowing River Ancholme, set in quiet countryside, offers some of the best freshwater fishing in England and is another real treat for bird watchers.
House prices in the Humberside region are relatively low.
