Property Services is a large department with large responsibilities. The Council has property assets of about £600M. Historically there is a backlog maintenance of about £50m on these. We need to reduce this. We are reviewing many parts of the property portfolio to look at future use and service need. This will include working with partners.
Over the next 10 years, the Council expects to invest around £700M in property and other long term assets. Nearly half of this is new schools building.
So there is a lot of interesting varied and challenging design, property care and valuation work to be done. That is why we need so many new staff over so many disciplines.
More generally
- this is a good authority. Currently 3 star in our CPA assessment, we want to be 4 star - the top rating
- this is a good authority to work for. Low staff turnover and low sickness levels, and very positive results from employee surveys are good evidence of this
- Property Services has a good reputation with the rest of the Council departments, and retains the vast majority of schools work.
